About this stotra
Among the most beautiful shlokas that describe Lord Vishnu's form and qualities, this one holds special significance. It begins by describing Lord Vishnu's primary aspect - "Sāntākāraṃ" - the very embodiment of peace. This peace manifests in His divine posture, "bhujagaśayanaṃ," reclining on the serpent Adishesha. From His "padmanābhaṃ" (lotus navel) springs all creation, showing He is "Sureśaṃ" (Lord of all devas) and "Viśvādhāraṃ" (sustainer of the universe).
The shloka then paints His divine form: "Gaganasadṛśaṃ" (vast as the sky), "Meghavarṇaṃ" (cloud-hued), and "Shubāṅgam" (of auspicious limbs). He is "Lakṣmīkāntaṃ" (beloved of Lakshmi) and "Kamalanayanam" (lotus-eyed), attributes that speak to His divine beauty and grace.
Finally, it reveals how devotees can experience Him, by using the word "Yogibhirdhyānagamyaṃ," so let us pay particular attention here. The phrase itself means that Lord Vishnu is "attainable to those who practice deep meditation, like the Yogis." This is because the Ultimate Reality (represented by Lord Vishnu in this context) cannot be comprehended through intellectual understanding alone, but is directly experienced through the complete dissolution of the mind, in a state where conventional barriers between subject (me the meditator) and the object of meditation dissolve. In that state of oneness emerges the direct self-shining experience of the Divine.
The following epithets in the verse now reveal their deeper significance when viewed from such a state of oneness: "Bhavabhayaharaṃ" (the remover of all worldly fears) – because in this state of unity, there remains no separate self or other to experience fear; and "Sarvalokaikanātham" (the Supreme Lord of all worlds) – because from this perspective, all of Creation is recognized as none other than the one Reality, the Divine itself, manifesting in infinite forms.
As the Bhagavata Purāna says, by constantly remembering the Lord's divine form and qualities, one develops those godly qualities and eventually disappears in Him. By regularly chanting this shloka with devotion and love, a devotee experiences the Lord's presence more tangibly. The heart opens to receive His grace, fears dissolve in His peace, and life itself becomes an offering at His lotus feet.
