Questions
What is a Kundali?
A Kundali, or birth chart, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born — the positions of the planets, the twelve houses, and the sign rising on the eastern horizon. Vedic astrology reads it as a description of the tendencies you carry, not a fixed account of what will happen.
Why does the time of birth matter so much?
The ascendant moves through a full sign roughly every two hours, and it sets where every house begins. A birth time wrong by an hour can shift the entire house structure, which changes most of the reading. The date and place alone still give the planetary positions, which is a great deal.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
Enter noon. It is the convention for an unknown time because it sits in the middle of the day and keeps the error in the Moon's position as small as possible. The planetary placements will be right; treat anything that depends on the houses as provisional.
Is this the same as a horoscope?
No. A horoscope in the newspaper sense is written for everyone born under one sun sign. A Kundali is calculated from your own date, time and place, and no two are alike unless two people were born at the same moment in the same city.
Satyam reads charts in the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac, as Vedic astrology does — which is why your Sun sign here may differ from the one a Western horoscope gives you.
