Dedicated to Vishnu · 1 verse · Sanatana Shastras

About this stotra

The Dhanvantari Mantra calls upon the divine healer, Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda, for health and protection from ailments. Known to carry a pot of amṛta, the nectar of immortality, Dhanvantari’s blessings are believed to eradicate suffering and bring vitality to body and mind. By addressing Dhanvantari as Narayana (a form of Vishnu), the mantra emphasises His divine source and role as both a healer and protector. The overall purpose of this shloka is to invoke the blessings, healing powers, and protective grace of Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician, for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is commonly chanted by those seeking relief from illness, as well as by practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine.
The human body is not merely a biological entity but an instrument through which we can fulfill life's higher purposes. Just as a musician needs a well-tuned instrument to create beautiful music, we need a healthy body to perform our duties effectively and pursue spiritual growth. Despite the best diet, exercise, and medical care, we cannot guarantee its perfect functioning. Every breath, every heartbeat operates by a power beyond our control. When illness strikes, it affects not just our physical comfort but our goals and mental equilibrium. This vulnerability reminds us that while we must care for our body, ultimately, we depend on divine grace - recognising that this precious instrument of life requires both our careful maintenance and divine protection.
