This is a beautiful Sanskrit verse that emphasizes the constant remembrance of Govinda (a name of Lord Krishna/Vishnu). The repeated use of ‘Govinda’ throughout the verse creates a poetic rhythm that reinforces the theme of constant devotion.
"Govindeti sadā snānaṃ" - This means ‘Let bathing always be in Govinda's name.’ Here, snānaṃ (bathing) represents physical purification, suggesting that even routine activities should be connected to divine remembrance.
"Govindeti sadājapaṃ" - This translates to ‘Let there always be repetition/chanting of Govinda's name.’ Japa refers to the meditative practice of repeating a divine name or mantra, often using prayer beads (mala). It gradually quiets the constantly fluctuating mind (chitta vritti) and leads it to a state of one-pointed concentration (ekagrata), ultimately creating a deep transformation in consciousness.
"Govindeti sadā dhyānaṃ" - This means ‘Let meditation always be on Govinda.’ Dhyānaṃ here represents the complete absorption of consciousness in the divine form or essence of Govinda. It begins with focusing on a specific form or quality of Govinda but gradually deepens into a state where the distinction between the meditator and the object of meditation begins to dissolve.
"Sadā Govinda kīrtanam" - This translates to ‘Always sing/glorify Govinda.’ Kīrtanam refers to devotional singing or glorification of the Lord. It creates a unique state where both our emotional centre (hridaya) and intellectual faculties (buddhi) become aligned in divine remembrance.
The verse beautifully progresses from external practices (bathing) to increasingly internal spiritual practices (chanting, meditation) and then to expressive devotion (singing).
The repetition of "Sadā" (always) emphasises the importance of maintaining continuous awareness of the divine throughout all activities, a concept known as "constant remembrance" or "smarana" in Hindu philosophy.
