About this stotra
This Shanti mantra is traditionally chanted before undertaking a study of sacred texts, expressing the deepest aspirations of a sincere seeker of knowledge. It beautifully articulates the relationship between speech and mind, and the commitment to truth.
The opening lines "oṃ vāṅ me manasi pratiṣṭhitā, mano me vāci pratiṣṭhitam" acknowledge the intimate connection between speech (vak) and mind (manas). This indicates that true learning happens when our words and thoughts are in perfect harmony - what we speak should be well-established in our understanding, and our understanding should find clear expression through our speech.
The prayer continues with "āvirāvir ma edhi" - may knowledge reveal itself to me, reveal itself to me clearly. The repetition of āvir (reveal, make clear) intensifies the request for knowledge to reveal itself with sustained clarity, as Vedic truths are subtle and not immediately apparent to ordinary perception. This earnest seeker doesn't stop there, but goes deeper with two profound aspects of retention: "vedasya ma āṇīsthaḥ" (may I never be separated) - praying for such deep understanding that the teaching becomes inseparable from one's own being, and "śrutaṃ me mā prahāsīḥ" (may I never abandon/forsake what I have learned) - seeking protection from forces beyond one's control that might cause this wisdom to slip away.
And in response to these sublime requests, the seeker makes a strong commitment through "anena adhitena ahorātran sandadhāmi" - pledging to connect day and night through continuous contemplation of what is learned, recognising that such profound understanding requires unwavering dedication.
The seeker further makes a two-fold promise: "ṛtaṃ vadiṣyami, satyam vadiṣyami" - committing to live a life aligned with both Ṛtam (the eternal law that governs the cosmic harmony and balance) and Satyam (the absolute Truth in its most fundamental form—the eternal, supreme Reality, Brahman).
The final verses seek protection (avatu) for both the learner and all those who teach or share knowledge, recognising that the transmission of sacred knowledge is a blessed endeavour requiring divine grace.
The mantra concludes with the traditional threefold peace invocation – "Om Shantih Shantih Shantih" - seeking a state of harmony that enables learning by removing disturbances at the physical, mental, and spiritual levels.

Oṃ, may my speech be established in my mind, and my mind be established in my speech. May the sacred knowledge reveal itself clearly to me. May I retain what I have learned. May I connect day and night through this study, contemplating its meaning unceasingly. I shall speak what is right (ṛtaṃ), I shall speak what is true (satyam). May that truth protect me and the teacher. May it protect both of us. Let there be peace, peace, peace.
