About this stotra

This powerful verse from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.3.28) is a Pavamāna Mantra or purifying chant to dissolve the seeker’s false identification with body-mind, and recognise one’s true nature as the eternal, limitless and omniscient Self. It is a heartfelt prayer seeking liberation from the illusions of life. The devotee asks to be led from ignorance (asat, darkness, and death) to enlightenment (sat or truth, light, and immortality).
"Asato Mā Sadgamaya" means "Lead me from unreality to reality." This profound invocation addresses the fundamental Vedantic distinction between the transient (Asat - unreal) and the eternal (Sat - reality). The fundamental mistake is the belief that I am a separate body-mind entity that experiences a world outside. But closer observation reveals that what is referred to as 'I' is merely a thought—a concept reinforced since childhood. What is called ‘my body’ is simply a field of sensations. And what is perceived as the ‘outside world’ consists entirely of sense perceptions—sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile impressions. All these phenomena are inert by nature. i.e., they are not self-aware. And yet, I am aware of all of these. What or who is this ‘I’? This ‘I’ is consciousness itself— the pure awareness in which all phenomena appear. In our misidentification with the body-mind, we overlook the very consciousness that enables all knowing. More precisely, consciousness itself seemingly ‘forgets’ its true nature and appears to divide into a finite subject ‘me’ inside a body that experiences an objective ‘world’ outside. This apparent division is described as ‘Māyā’—the power of consciousness to project a seemingly real but ultimately unreal (asat) appearance of plurality onto its inherently undivided, unchanging reality (Sat). This apparent localization of consciousness into a limited entity that is seemingly separate from the whole creates a feeling of incompleteness. This is the root of all suffering. To overcome this sense of lack, we look for permanent happiness in the outside world — in things and relationships. But since all these are transient and could never fulfill what we are truly seeking, which is our true nature as the limitless Self, we remain deeply unsatisfied. When the seeker says "Lead me from unreality to reality," they are asking to move beyond this false sense of separation, limitation and recognise the one undivided consciousness that is our true nature.
"Tamaso Mā Jyotirgamaya" means "Lead me from darkness to light". "Tamas" (darkness) symbolises spiritual ignorance (Avidyā) - the state of misunderstanding reality, as described earlier. This line represents the journey from confusion to clarity, from limited perception to expanded awareness. Like an actor who becomes so immersed in playing the role of a beggar that he actually experiences the suffering of poverty, we (consciousness forgetting its true nature) identify as a limited entity and suffer as a result. This line is a sincere plea for divine grace to pierce through the veils of misconception and reveal the luminous truth of our essential divinity.
"Mṛtyor Mā Amṛtaṃ Gamaya" (Lead me from death to immortality) This is the ultimate prayer for "moksha" or liberation. A sincere plea to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death (samsara) that has bound me through countless lifetimes. A direct appeal to the divine to help me realise the immortal, unchanging essence - that I AM. It's the soul's deepest longing to merge back into its source, like a river returning to the ocean.
In summary, this sacred mantra represents a profound spiritual aspiration: moving from limitation to infinity, from ignorance to wisdom, from temporal to eternal.
The phrase Oṃ Shantih, Shantih, Shantih is a prayer for universal peace and protection at all levels of existence.
