वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ

Dedicated to Ganesha · 1 verse · Sanatana Shastras

About this stotra

This verse is a popular invocation to Lord Ganesha, who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the God of new beginnings. The verse is traditionally chanted at the beginning of new undertakings, whether they're religious ceremonies, studies, or any important work, as it's believed that invoking Lord Ganesha at the start removes potential obstacles and ensures smooth completion of the task.
Lord Ganesha is addressed here with epithets that highlight his powerful form, radiant energy, and divine protection. "Vakratuṇḍa" refers to his curved trunk, symbolising flexibility and adaptability in facing life's challenges. "Mahākāya" describes his massive form, representing his all-encompassing nature and ability to handle enormous challenges. "Sūryakoṭi samaprabha" compares his radiance to that of one crore (ten million) suns, symbolising the supreme wisdom of the Lord that dispels the darkness of ignorance.
The verse culminates in the devotee’s prayer for Ganesha's blessings to ensure that all their tasks are completed without hindrances or difficulties. "Nirvighnaṃ kuru me deva" means "O Lord, remove all obstacles for me." This is a plea to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, to ensure a smooth and successful path in all endeavours, without difficulties. Sometimes difficulties are unavoidable, and might even be essential for our own growth. That is why this prayer includes "Sarvakāryeṣu sarvadā" (in all actions, always) - a prayer for constant support. "Sarvakāryeṣu" encompasses every kind of action, from the mundane to the spiritual, from personal to professional endeavours, while "sarvadā" implies an eternal connection with the divine. Together, these words seek not just the removal of obstacles, but the wisdom to understand them, the strength to face them, and the grace to grow through them - a comprehensive prayer for constant divine support through all of life's journeys. Such is the power of this prayer to Lord Ganesha.
