About this stotra

This shloka from the Rig Veda is one of the most significant invocations used in the worship of Lord Ganesha. Originally a Vedic hymn to Brahmanaspati, it beautifully captures the divine attributes that came to be associated with Lord Ganesha - his lordship over the ganas (groups), his supreme wisdom, and his mastery over sacred knowledge. This shloka remains one of the most revered prayers to Lord Ganesha today. As a deity who is highly esteemed in Vedic rituals, Lord Ganesha is invoked at the beginning of many Vedic ceremonies, rituals, prayers and important events.
Lord Ganesha is referred to as Kavi (the seer or wise one) and Kavī̱nāṃ Upa̱maśravastavam (the most famous or renowned among the wise). This highlights his role as the deity of wisdom and intellect. Brahmanaspati is a title used here to recognise Lord Ganesha as the Lord of divine knowledge and protector of the sacred prayers. The phrase "ā nah shrunvan nū̱tibhih sīda sādanam" is a direct appeal to Lord Ganesha - Hearing (our invocations), please come and sit in our heart with (your) protections and blessings.
As with many Vedic mantras, this shloka carries a powerful vibrational quality that is said to harmonise the mind and surroundings. Chanting it regularly can help one focus, remove mental blocks, and foster a sense of inner calm and clarity.
