About this stotra
This timeless Sanskrit prayer extends far beyond personal or familial well-being. Rather than seeking personal welfare alone, it expands our consciousness to embrace the well-being of all existence. The repeated use of the word "Sarve" (meaning 'all' or 'everyone', without any exception) emphasises this universal scope, transcending the limitations of individual concern.
The opening lines "sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ" express the profound wish for all beings to experience true happiness (sukhinaḥ) and perfect health (nirāmayāḥ). Here, happiness refers not merely to transient pleasures but to that deep contentment that comes from inner peace, while health indicates wholeness at all levels - physical, mental, and spiritual. The prayer continues with "sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu," asking that all beings perceive (paśyantu) what is auspicious and noble (bhadrāṇi) - a request for a clear vision that can recognise the sacred in all of life.
The line "mā kaścid duḥkha bhāgbhavet" represents the culmination of this universal compassion - may no being partake of sorrow. This is not just a wish for the absence of suffering, but a recognition of our fundamental interconnectedness, where the pain of one is the pain of all. The mantra concludes by invoking peace to pervade all levels of our existence.
