About this stotra
This is another profound Shanti Mantra traditionally recited between a teacher (Guru) and a student before beginning their studies. What makes this mantra special is its emphasis on the sacred relationship between teacher and student, acknowledging that spiritual learning is a collaborative journey where both parties need to work in harmony.
The prayer seeks mutual protection (saha nāvavatu), where both teacher and student are safeguarded together on their journey of learning. The next request is that they be nourished together (saha nau bhunaktu). The use of the word "nourish" implies not just the physical act of sustenance, but also sharing the fruits of learning, wisdom, and spiritual growth - a recognition that the teaching-learning relationship is mutually enriching.
Then they pray that both teacher and student work together with vigor and energy (saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai). They ask that their learning process be brilliant and effective (tejasvi nāvadhītamastu). This request is particularly significant because it addresses the quality and outcome of the learning process - that it should be spiritually radiant and truly effective in transforming both participants.
This all-encompassing prayer for learning culminates with the request for harmony - that they should never have discord or resentment between them (mā vidviṣāvahai). This request acknowledges a profound practical insight - that the challenges and demands of spiritual learning can naturally create tensions between teacher and student, and therefore both parties must consciously maintain harmony and avoid discord for effective transmission of sacred knowledge.
The threefold peace invocation that follows seeks harmony at all levels - internal, external, and divine - creating the perfect conditions for knowledge to flourish and bear fruit.
This verse serves as a reminder of the sacred bond between teacher and student and the importance of mutual respect, cooperation, and peace in all forms of knowledge acquisition.
