About this stotra

This shloka encapsulates the essence of Oṃ in its completeness - it is both the means and the end, capable of fulfilling earthly needs while simultaneously leading one to the highest spiritual realization. The verse reveals the profound practice of meditation on Oṃ, not as a mere technique but as a direct path to recognizing our true nature. It teaches that through constant meditation on Oṃ, one realizes the eternal truth of pure consciousness, the ultimate enlightenment.
The Oṃ (ॐ) symbol consists of the following parts, each representing different states of consciousness:
The curve at the bottom represents the waking state (jāgrat).
The curve in the middle represents the dream state (svapna).
The curve at the top represents the deep sleep state (sushupti).
The crescent shape represents illusion (māyā).
The dot (bindu) above represents the fourth state (turiyā), the state of pure consciousness.
Together, they represent the totality of existence and consciousness.
The first line of the shloka, "oṃkāraṃ biṃdusaṃyuktaṃ nityaṃ dhyāyanti yoginaḥ," speaks of accomplished yogis who continuously meditate upon Oṃ in the state of Turiya (represented by the bindu), where the illusion of separation has dissolved. The shloka emphasizes the need for constant, continuous meditation (nityaṃ dhyāyanti) to dissolve into that state of consciousness.
The second line, "kāmadaṃ mokṣadaṃ caiva oṃkārāya namo namaḥ," points to Oṃ as the source of both worldly fulfillment (kāmadaṃ) and liberation (mokṣadaṃ). This dual nature makes sense when we understand that Oṃ is the source of all existence - both manifest and unmanifest. The verse concludes with a repeated salutation (namo namaḥ) to Om, showing complete surrender to this sacred symbol and all it represents.
