ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय

About this stotra

This sacred mantra is one of the most profound expressions of complete surrender to the Divine. When a devotee chants "Oṃ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya," they're saying: "My dear Lord, I see you in everything. Every breath I take is yours. Every heartbeat sings your name." Each word of the mantra brings us closer:
"Oṃ" reminds us that Krishna is the source of everything
"Namo" is our heart bowing down in love
"Bhagavate" lets us dwell on the Lord's endless beautiful qualities
"Vāsudevāya" helps us see Krishna's presence in all beings, all things, and in our own hearts. The meaning of the word Vāsudevā comes from "Vāsu" - the one in whom all beings reside; and "Vasanthi" - He who resides in all beings; and "Devā" - one for whom the acts of creation, sustenance and destruction are mere play. In short, the term refers to one who permeates all that is. And as the Bhagavad Gita states - Rare and difficult to find, is the great soul who knows that Vasudeva is All.
When chanted with love, this mantra dissolves the feeling of a limited "I" and "mine." This limited sense of "I" and "mine" chains us to endless wanting, comparing, and possessing. We suffer because we cling to things, relationships, and achievements as "mine," forgetting they all belong to Krishna. We suffer because our ego constantly demands recognition, control, and satisfaction. When the mantra melts these away, what remains is just pure love and the joy of belonging to Krishna. Only Krishna remains. It's like being a child again, who knows their parent will take care of everything - there is complete trust, total surrender and love.
The Vishnu Sahasranāma Stotra states: "The one who seeks Lord Vāsudeva, looking upon him as the highest goal to be attained, gets cleansed of all sins. With a mind thus purified, they attain the eternal Brahman." It also states: "Nothing inauspicious ever befalls the devotees of Vāsudeva, nor do they have any fear of the cyclic operation of birth, disease, old age and death any longer (with the certain prospect of attaining Him at the end of the current span of life)." Thus, the importance of letting the divine name of the Lord be on our lips constantly, cannot be understated.
When to chant the mantra
Before starting any spiritual practice or ritual
While offering food to Krishna (prasādam)
During meditation, focusing on each syllable fosters a deep intimacy with the Lord ending in oneness
In japa (repetitive chanting) using a japa mālā
While doing daily tasks, the mantra helps us see everything as Krishna's presence
While performing sevā (service)
During difficult times - it brings peace and surrender.
