About this stotra

The Navagraha Mangalashtakam is an astrological hymn invoking blessings from all nine celestial bodies (navagraha) of Vedic tradition: Sūrya, Chandra, Maṅgala, Budha, Bṛhaspati, Śukra, Śani, Rāhu, and Ketu. Each verse follows a dense, formulaic structure that encodes essential jyotiṣa details for the respective graha—its ruling sign, directional association, gotra lineage, favorable house placements, planetary friendships and enmities, presiding deity, and ritual elements such as the specific wood used for homa offerings.
This systematic presentation makes the stotram both a devotional recitation and a mnemonic aid for practitioners of Vedic astrology. The recurring refrain kuryāt sadā maṅgalam ("may it always bring auspiciousness") transforms technical astrological knowledge into prayer, asking each graha to bestow favorable influences. Regular recitation is traditionally recommended to pacify planetary afflictions and cultivate harmony with cosmic rhythms.
