About this stotra

The Gayatri Mantra, considered the mother of all Vedic mantras, is a profound invocation for spiritual illumination. At its core, this is what the prayer is: "May the Lord brighten my mind and make me think properly so that I make the right decisions." It is a very apt prayer for life, since life is full of decisions of various magnitudes.
Gayatri is the name of a chandas (metre) consisting of 24 syllables. So, it is the name of the mantra and the metre. The Gayatri Mantra is found in all the four vedas and is therefore one of the most sacred and popular mantras. Gayatri also refers to the divine force or Goddess of vedic hymns who protects (trayate) the one who utters them with understanding and devotion.
The opening words of the Gayatri Mantra - "Oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ" - begin with Oṃ, which represents the supreme Lord who protects and sustains all three worlds. Following this supreme Oṃ are the three Vyāhrtis - sacred utterances that name and invoke the three fundamental realms of existence that the Lord protects: Bhūḥ refers to the earth realm, our physical world of matter and sensory experience. Bhuvaḥ represents the atmospheric realm, the subtle dimension of energy and mind that lies between the physical and spiritual planes. Svaḥ denotes the celestial realm, the highest dimension of pure consciousness that transcends ordinary mental understanding.
However, these Vyāhrtis are far more than mere labels for cosmic regions. Think of this opening line as a spiritual preparation, much like cleaning and preparing a vessel before receiving something precious. By chanting "Oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ" we are readying ourselves at every level of our being: our physical body and senses (bhūḥ), our vital energy and mental faculties (bhuvaḥ), and our deepest spiritual awareness (svaḥ). We are making ourselves receptive to the profound meditation that follows in the rest of the mantra.
In the heart of the mantra, "tat savitur vareṇyaṃ bhargo devasya dhīmahi," we open ourselves to the supreme light (bhargaḥ) of the Divine (savitur). We seek to immerse our entire consciousness in it, letting this self-luminous principle illuminate every aspect of our being. It is a conscious surrender to and absorption in that which is most worthy of our contemplation (varenyam).
The final phrase "dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt" is a sublime prayer for this divine light to illumine and guide (pracodayāt) our intelligence (dhiyo) toward enlightenment. It acknowledges that true understanding can only come through divine grace, asking for our faculties to be directed toward the highest truth.
When to chant the Gayatri Mantra – The traditional practice of this mantra centres around the three sandhyas (dawn, midday, and dusk) - transitional moments when nature itself is in a state of profound harmony and our consciousness is naturally more receptive to subtle influences. Some practitioners also invoke its sacred presence before meals, recognising the divine principle in the very act of nourishment.
How to chant the Gayatri Mantra – The recitation begins with a moment of inner silence and receptivity, acknowledging Gayatri as the embodiment of divine wisdom. The mantra may be chanted audibly or mentally, with deep attention to each syllable, allowing its vibrations to align one's entire being with the divine principle it invokes. One may chant it once, thrice, eleven times or even 108 times, but remaining in that state of sacred absorption until the mind naturally settles into deep stillness and clarity.
