About this stotra

This first part of this shloka states that the food (anna) is Brahma, the essence (rasa) is Vishnu, and the one who partakes of it (bhoktā) is Maheśvaraḥ (Shiva). This establishes the sacred trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) in the act of eating - the food itself represents the creator Brahma, its taste or essence represents the sustainer Vishnu, and the person eating represents the transformer, Shiva.
The second part teaches that one who eats with the sacred understanding described in the first half - where food is seen as Brahma, its essence as Vishnu, and the consumer as Maheśvaraḥ - becomes free from the various doshas (impurities) that can arise from eating. These impurities manifest in multiple ways:
– physical doshas like atibhojana dosha (overeating)
– ajirna bhojana (eating before previous food is digested), and
– viruddha āhāra (incompatible food combinations);
– raga dosha that arises from excessive attachment to taste and pleasure-driven eating;
– karmic impurities from food obtained or prepared with negative intentions;
– impurities that increase tamas (dullness, lethargy) from consuming stale or improperly prepared food; and
– ethical impurities from wasting food or eating without gratitude.
The profound teaching here is that by approaching food with spiritual awareness rather than mere physical consumption, we can transcend all these potential negativities. This transforms eating from a simple biological function into a sacred act, where understanding (jñātvā) of food's divine nature liberates (na lipyate) us from these various doshas.
By approaching our meals with this sacred understanding, we not only nourish our body but also engage in a spiritual practice. It serves as a reminder to treat food with reverence and recognise in it, the divine force that sustains life.
