About this stotra

This profound verse from the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 15, Verse 14) is often recited before meals as it establishes the sacred nature of digestion and helps cultivate the right consciousness while eating. By remembering that the digestive fire within us is divine in nature, we approach our meal not just as a physical act but as a sacred process where the Divine itself participates in our nourishment.
The first part "ahaṃ vaiśvānaro bhūtvā" means "I, becoming the fire of digestion (vaishvanara)." This reveals that the digestive fire itself is the Lord - the very principle of digestion and bodily warmth is divine in nature.
"Prāṇināṃ dehamāśritaḥ" means "dwelling in the bodies of all living beings," - indicating that this divine digestive principle is present not just in humans but in all creatures that consume food.
"Prāṇāpāna samāyuktaḥ" refers to the digestive fire (vaishvanara) being united with or working in harmony with both prana and apana. Prana is the inward-moving breath energy that governs intake, including the intake of food, while apana is the downward-moving breath energy that governs elimination. The digestive process requires the coordinated action of both these vital forces - prana helps with the intake and initial breakdown of food, while apana helps move the food through the digestive system and eventually eliminates waste. When these breaths are in harmony with the digestive fire, digestion is optimal. This is why calm, steady breathing while eating is considered essential for good digestion.
The final part "pacāmyannaṃ caturvidham" means "I digest the four types of food" - those that are chewed (bhakshya or bhojya), swallowed (peya), licked (lehya), and sucked (choshya or khādya). By remembering this before eating, we acknowledge that the divine fire principle within us is responsible for digesting all types of food, transforming them into energy and sustenance for the body. This understanding helps us eat with awareness and gratitude, recognising that digestion itself is a divine function where the cosmic force transforms food into life-sustaining energy.
