Questions
What are the Sun, Moon and rising signs?
They are the zodiac signs occupied, at the moment you were born, by the Sun, by the Moon, and by the eastern horizon. The rising sign — the lagna or ascendant — sets where each of the twelve houses begins in your chart.
Why does Vedic astrology give a different Sun sign?
Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) measures the zodiac against the fixed stars — the sidereal zodiac — while Western astrology measures it from the spring equinox. The two are now a little over 24 degrees apart, so many people find their Vedic Sun sign is the one before the sign they are used to.
Why does the Moon sign matter so much in Jyotisha?
Jyotisha reads the Moon sign, or rashi, as central to temperament and the mind, and the Moon’s position also fixes the nakshatra and the dasha periods. It is often treated as more personal than the Sun sign.
What if I do not know my birth time?
Use noon. The Sun and Moon signs are usually right without an exact time, though the Moon moves quickly enough that a birth near a sign boundary can change it. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so treat it as provisional without an accurate time.
