About this stotra
The Sri Lakshmi Narayana Hrudaya Stotram is a combined hymn comprising two complementary sections: the Narayana Hrudayam and the Lakshmi Hrudayam. The Narayana Hrudayam opens with ritual nyasa (placement of mantras on the body), a dhyana (meditation) on Vishnu, and an ashtaka (eight-verse hymn) proclaiming Narayana as the supreme light, supreme Brahman, supreme deity and the source of Brahma, Shiva and Indra. The Lakshmi Hrudayam similarly glorifies the goddess Lakshmi as the indwelling power of Narayana and the bestower of all wealth and liberation. Traditionally both sections are recited together, and the text is widely used in Vaishnava daily worship and on Fridays.

atha prārthanādaśakam ।
nārāyaṇa tvamēvāsi daharākhyē hṛdi sthitaḥ ।
prērakaḥ prēryamāṇānāṃ tvayā prēritamānasaḥ ॥ 9 ॥
Thus begins the Prarthana Dashakam (ten verses of prayer). O Narayana, you alone dwell in the lotus of the heart known as the cave (dahara). You are the inspirer; my mind is inspired by you. (9)

tvadājñāṃ śirasā dhṛtvā japāmi janapāvanam ।
nānōpāsanamārgāṇāṃ bhavakṛdbhāvabōdhakaḥ ॥ 10 ॥
Holding your command upon my head, I recite this mantra that purifies all people. You are the one who gives meaning to all the paths of worship and who reveals their inner significance. (10)

You are the bestower of the bliss of worldly existence (bhava sukha) as well as the one beyond it. The entire universe, deluded by your maya, is fashioned by you alone. (11)

tvadadhiṣṭhānamātrēṇa sā vai sarvārthakāriṇī ।
tvamētāṃ cha puraskṛtya sarvakāmānpradarśaya ॥ 12 ॥
By your mere presence, Lakshmi (your maya) accomplishes all purposes. Taking her as your companion, reveal to me the fulfilment of all desires. (12)
na mē tvadanyastrātāsti tvadanyanna hi daivatam ।
tvadanyaṃ na hi jānāmi pālakaṃ puṇyavardhanam ॥ 13 ॥
There is no saviour other than you for me; there is truly no deity other than you. I know no other protector, no other increaser of merit. (13)

tāvatsiddhirbhavētsādhyā sarvathā sarvadā vibhō ॥ 14 ॥
As long as worldly feeling remains in my mind, pervaded by the force of thought — may my spiritual attainment be accomplished in every way and always, O all-pervading Lord. (14)

I am the foremost among sinners; you are the foremost among the compassionate. Who other than me deserves your compassion in all three worlds? (15)
tvayāhaṃ naiva sṛṣṭaśchēnna syāttava dayāḻutā ।
āmayō vā na sṛṣṭaśchēdauṣadhasya vṛthōdayaḥ ॥ 16 ॥
If you had not created me, your quality of compassion would not exist. If disease had not been created, the arising of medicine would be purposeless. (16)
pāpasaṅghapariśrāntaḥ pāpātmā pāparūpadhṛt ।
tvadanyaḥ kō'tra pāpēbhyastrātāsti jagatītalē ॥ 17 ॥
Exhausted by the accumulation of sins, I am sinful in soul and sinful in form. Who other than you can rescue the sinful on this earth? (17)

tvamēva bandhuścha sakhā tvamēva ।
tvamēva sēvyaścha gurustvamēva
tvamēva sarvaṃ mama dēva dēva ॥ 18 ॥
You alone are my mother and father; you alone are my relative and friend. You alone are my master and guru. You alone are everything for me, O God of gods. (18)
prārthanādaśakaṃ chaiva mūlāṣṭakamataḥ param ।
yaḥ paṭhēchChṛṇuyānnityaṃ tasya lakṣmīḥ sthirā bhavēt ॥ 19 ॥
Whoever reads daily this Prarthana Dashakam (ten prayer verses) and the Mula Ashtakam that follows — for that person Lakshmi (prosperity) shall become stable. (19)
nārāyaṇasya hṛdayaṃ sarvābhīṣṭaphalapradam ।
lakṣmīhṛdayakaṃ stōtraṃ yadi chēttadvinākṛtam ॥ 20 ॥
The Hridayam of Narayana bestows all desired fruits. But the Lakshmi Hridayam stotra — if it is done without it — (20)
tatsarvaṃ niṣphalaṃ prōktaṃ lakṣmīḥ kruddhyati sarvadā ।
ētatsaṅkalitaṃ stōtraṃ sarvakāmaphalapradam ॥ 21 ॥
— that whole recitation is declared fruitless, and Lakshmi becomes displeased always. This combined stotra bestows the fruits of all desires. (21)
lakṣmīhṛdayakaṃ chaiva tathā nārāyaṇātmakam ।
japēdyaḥ saṅkalīkṛtya sarvābhīṣṭamavāpnuyāt ॥ 22 ॥
The Lakshmi Hridayam and also the Narayana Hridayam — whoever recites them together in combination shall attain all desired objects. (22)
nārāyaṇasya hṛdayamādau japtvā tataḥ param ।
lakṣmīhṛdayakaṃ stōtraṃ japēnnārāyaṇaṃ punaḥ ॥ 23 ॥
First recite the Narayana Hridayam, then after that recite the Lakshmi Hridayam stotra, then Narayana again. (23)
punarnārāyaṇaṃ japtvā punarlakṣmīnutiṃ japēt ।
punarnārāyaṇaṃ jāpyaṃ saṅkalīkaraṇaṃ bhavēt ॥ 24 ॥
Having recited Narayana again, then recite the Lakshmi praise again. Then recite Narayana once more — this becomes the combined (sankalita) recitation. (24)
ēvaṃ madhyē dvivārēṇa japētsaṅkalitaṃ tu tat ।
lakṣmīhṛdayakaṃ stōtraṃ sarvakāmaprakāśitam ॥ 25 ॥
Thus in the middle, by reciting twice, the combined Lakshmi Hridayam stotra, which illuminates all desires, is complete. (25)
tadvajjapādikaṃ kuryādētatsaṅkalitaṃ śubham ।
sarvānkāmānavāpnōti ādhivyādhibhayaṃ harēt ॥ 26 ॥
Similarly, one should perform the japa and other practices of this combined auspicious stotra. One attains all desires and removes all mental and physical afflictions and fears. (26)
gōpyamētatsadā kuryānna sarvatra prakāśayēt ।
iti guhyatamaṃ śāstraṃ prāptaṃ brahmādikaiḥ purā ॥ 27 ॥
This should always be kept secret; it should not be revealed everywhere. This most secret scripture was attained by Brahma and others in ancient times. (27)
tasmātsarvaprayatnēna gōpayētsādhayēsudhīḥ ।
yatraitatpustakaṃ tiṣṭhēllakṣmīnārāyaṇātmakam ॥ 28 ॥
Therefore, with every effort, the wise person should guard it and practise it. Wherever this book of Lakshmi Narayana resides — (28)
bhūtapaiśāchavētāḻa bhayaṃ naiva tu sarvadā ।
lakṣmīhṛdayakaṃ prōktaṃ vidhinā sādhayētsudhīḥ ॥ 29 ॥
— there shall be no fear from ghosts, evil spirits and vampires (vetala), ever. The Lakshmi Hridayam should be practised by the wise according to the prescribed method. (29)
bhṛguvārē cha rātrau cha pūjayētpustakadvayam ।
sarvathā sarvadā satyaṃ gōpayētsādhayētsudhīḥ ।
gōpanātsādhanāllōkē dhanyō bhavati tattvataḥ ॥ 30 ॥
On Fridays (Bhriguvara) and at night, one should worship the two books (texts). The wise person who guards and practises this becomes truly blessed in the world. (30)
ityatharvarahasyē uttarabhāgē nārāyaṇahṛdayaṃ sampūrṇam ।
Thus ends the Narayana Hridayam from the Atharva Rahasya (secret portion of the Atharvaveda).
