About this stotra
The Shiva Mangalashtakam is an eight-verse hymn invoking auspiciousness (maṅgalam) upon Lord Shiva through a cascade of His sacred names and attributes. Each verse concludes with the refrain maṅgalam, creating a rhythmic blessing that honors the Lord as Chandrachuda (the moon-crested), Nilakantha (the blue-throated), Rudra (the howling one), and Gaurikanta (beloved of Gauri). The hymn paints vivid images of Shiva's iconic form — ash-smeared body, serpent as sacred thread, rudraksha garlands, and sky-flowing locks — while simultaneously acknowledging Him as both beyond qualities and the essence of all qualities.
Traditionally recited during Shiva puja, on Mondays, or during Pradosha observances, this stotram is cherished for its meditative simplicity and the protective grace it is believed to invoke. The closing verses state that one who recites this maṅgalāṣṭakam attains fulfillment of all desires and ultimately sāyujya — complete union with the Supreme.
