About this stotra
The Batuk Bhairava Kavacham is a protective armor hymn (kavacham) addressed to Baṭuka Bhairava — the eternally youthful form of Bhairava. The name baṭuka (बटुक) means "young boy" or "lad" in Sanskrit, and in tantric iconography Baṭuka Bhairava is Bhairava as an eternal child: fierce yet pure, unbound by time, wearing a loincloth, bearing trident and skull-bowl, and radiating both terror and grace. This boyhood form is considered the most accessible and benevolent aspect of Bhairava, and the one most often invoked for personal protection.
Drawn from the Bhairavatantra and embedded in the Bṛhajjyotiṣārṇava of Shri Harikrishna, this text unfolds as a dialogue in which the Goddess Parvati, at Mahadeva's request, reveals the kavacham as protection from mortal danger in cremation grounds, in battle, and from disease, fire, and elemental forces.
The kavacham invokes eight directional guardians — Asitanga, Ruru, Chanda Bhairava, Krodhana, Unmatta, Kapali, Bhishana, and Samhara Bhairava — covering all eight directions, the zenith, and the netherworld. Additional protections extend to family, livestock, land, and prosperity through the sons of the yoginis Dakini, Hakini, Tulakini, Shakinika, and Malini. The text concludes with instructions for inscribing the kavacham on birch bark or plantain leaf using saffron and sacred pigments, to be worn as a protective amulet.
Reciting or wearing this kavacham is said to make the practitioner free of all obstacles, with Bhairava himself present wherever the text is chanted.
