About this stotra
This prayer seeks the grace of the divine Mother for protection and the ability to alleviate the troubles and sufferings of devotees. For those who come to Her seeking refuge (śaraṇāgata), and for those who are distressed and afflicted by suffering (dīnārta), She is the ultimate refuge, the supreme resort (parāyaṇe). She shields them and liberates them from suffering (paritrāṇa). This opening line beautifully captures the motherly aspect of the Divine, emphasising Her role as the ultimate protector of those who surrender to Her.
The prayer continues with salutations to you, O Divine Mother Narayani, who removes (hare) the sufferings (ārti) of all (sarvasya). For devotees, this verse serves as a reminder to seek refuge in the divine Mother during times of hardship and to trust in the Goddess’s ability to deliver them from their troubles.
