About this stotra
This verse is a powerful and widely chanted salutation to the Divine Mother, specifically addressing her as the source of all auspiciousness and the fulfiller of all righteous desires. It praises her as "sarva mangala mangalye" - the most auspicious among all that is auspicious and "sarvārthasādhike" - the one who fulfills all righteous purposes or goals. The word "sarvārtha" combines two key concepts: "sarva," meaning all or complete, and "artha," which has multiple meanings including material wealth, goal, or any object of achievement. When used in the context of the four Purusharthas (the goals of human life), it encompasses dharma (righteousness), artha (material prosperity), kāma (desires), and moksha (liberation). This comprehensive understanding shows that the Divine Mother supports all legitimate aspirations of life, whether they are material or spiritual in nature.
The second line continues with "śaraṇye" - the protective force that shelters us in times of distress. The Goddess is also addressed as Tryambaka, the three-eyed one, symbolising her all-seeing wisdom and power. In times of suffering, thinking of the Goddess as the universal protector is bound to bring solace and comfort. Her protection is sought in every aspect of life, and her divine grace is seen as essential for removing obstacles and fulfilling desires.
The dual reference to both Parvati (through terms like "Gauri" and "Tryambake") and the aspect of Lakshmi (through "Nārāyaṇi") reflects the ultimate unity of divine energy. This verse emphasises that the supreme divine feminine principle transcends sectarian divisions. Whether one worships her as Parvati (the consort of Shiva) or as Lakshmi (Nārāyaṇi, the consort of Vishnu), she embodies the same universal Divine Mother, the source and sustainer of all creation.
