Verse 1

ajānantō yānti kṣayamavaśamanyōnyakalahai-
-ramī māyāgranthau tava pariluṭhantaḥ samayinaḥ ।
jaganmātarjanmajvarabhayatamaḥ kaumudi vayaṃ
namastē kurvāṇāḥ śaraṇamupayāmō bhagavatīm ॥ 1 ॥

Not knowing [the truth], these practitioners (samayins) caught in the knot of your Māyā rush helplessly to destruction through mutual conflicts. O Mother of the World, moonlight that dispels the darkness of the fever and fear of birth — making salutation to you, we take refuge in Bhagavatī.

Verse 2

vachastarkāgamyasvarasaparamānandavibhava-
-prabōdhākārāya dyutitulitanīlōtpalaruchē ।
śivādyārādhyāya stanabharavinamrāya satataṃ
namastasmai kasmaichana bhavatu mugdhāya mahasē ॥ 2 ॥

To that radiance — inaccessible to speech and logic, its essence the supreme bliss, taking the form of awakening, of brilliance rivaling the blue lotus — ever worshipped by Śiva and others, ever bowing under the weight of the breasts — to that certain mysterious luminosity, let there be salutation.

Verse 3

anādyantābhēdapraṇayarasikāpi praṇayinī
śivasyāsīryattvaṃ pariṇayavidhau dēvi gṛhiṇī ।
savitrī bhūtānāmapi yadudabhūḥ śailatanayā
tadētatsaṃsārapraṇayanamahānāṭakamukham ॥ 3 ॥

Though eternally relishing love with Śiva in non-dual union (anādi-anta-abhēda), yet O Devī, you became his spouse in the wedding ceremony. Though the generatrix (sāvitrī) of all beings, you took birth as the daughter of the mountain-king. This — O how wondrous — is the opening act of the grand drama of worldly creation.

Verse 4

bruvantyēkē tattvaṃ bhagavati sadanyē vidurasa-
-tparē mātaḥ prāhustava sadasadanyē sukavayaḥ ।
parē naitatsarvaṃ samabhidadhatē dēvi sudhiya-
-stadētattvanmāyāvilasitamaśēṣaṃ nanu śivē ॥ 4 ॥

Some call your nature Sat (pure Being), O Bhagavatī; others understand it as Asat (non-being); yet other fine poets declare it as Sat-asat (both being and non-being); still others call it Transcendent (Para). But the truly discerning ones, O Devī, declare none of these fully grasps [you] — all of it, O Śivā, is your Māyā's play.

Verse 5

luṭhadguñjāhārastanabharanamanmadhyalatikā-
-mudañchaddharmāmbhaḥ kaṇaguṇitavaktrāmbujarucham ।
śivaṃ pārthatrāṇapravaṇamṛgayākāraguṇitaṃ
śivāmanvagyāntīṃ śaraṇamahamanvēmi śabarīm ॥ 5 ॥

With rolling guñjā-berry necklace, with waist-stalk bending under the breast's weight, with face-lotus brightened by drops of dharma-water — I take refuge in Śabarī, who follows Śivā [the goddess], herself following Śiva [the hunter-god] engaged in the hunt of saving Arjuna.

Verse 6

mithaḥ kēśākēśiprathananidhanāstarkaghaṭanāḥ

prasīda pratyakṣībhava girisutē dēhi śaraṇaṃ
nirālambaṃ chētaḥ pariluṭhati pāriplavamidam ॥ 6 ॥

The philosophical arguments that end in mutual hair-pulling, the constructions of logic, the scriptural procedures that are objects of faith, devotion, and obeisance — O please relent, O daughter of the mountain, appear directly, grant refuge! This supportless, unsteady mind rolls about, helpless and adrift.

Verse 7

amuṣminviśvāsaṃ vijahihi mamāhnāya vapuṣi
prapadyēthāśchētaḥ sakalajananīmēva śaraṇam ॥ 7 ॥

Who will know where, by whom, when — what a dog eats, what fire [consumes], what a flock of birds [devours]? No one anywhere knows this. O mind, abandon trust in this perishable body of mine — surrender to the Sakala-Jananī alone as your refuge.

Verse 8

kimapyaṣṭāviṃśatkiraṇasakalībhūtamaniśaṃ
bhajē dhāma śyāmaṃ kuchabharanataṃ barbarakacham ॥ 8 ॥

The luminosity of crores of lightning-bolts, whose splendor has broken open the thicket of the six knots — having entered the mūlādhāra, then again taking a form that rains nectar — some radiance ever made whole by twenty-eight rays, dark-hued, bowing under the breast's weight, with disheveled tresses — I adore this.

Verse 9

ṣaḍaśraṃ bhittvādau daśadalamatha dvādaśadalaṃ
kalāśraṃ cha dvyaśraṃ gatavati namastē girisutē ॥ 9 ॥

Having passed through the interior of the four-petaled [mūlādhāra], then through the six-petaled void [svādhiṣṭhāna], through the three-coiled loop, flashing with the brilliance of ten thousand lightning-fires and suns — then piercing the six-angled [maṇipūra], the ten-petaled, the twelve-petaled, the sixteen-petaled triangle, and the bindu — O daughter of the mountain, salutation to you who have traversed all these.

Verse 10

chaturṇāmapyēṣāmupari kimapi prāhuraparē

Some call your [nature] 'kula' (tradition/body), O Mahāmāyā; others call it 'akula' (beyond tradition); yet others describe the merging of both as 'kaula'; and still others declare something beyond all four. O Great Illusionist, how shall we, these [finite beings], determine your true tattva?

Verse 11

vitanvānaḥ śaivaṃ kimapi vapurindīvararuchiḥ
kuchābhyāmānamrastava puruṣakārō vijayatē ॥ 11 ॥

He who, having incinerated with the radiance of crores of dissolution-suns the forest of the six paths (ṣaḍadhvā), bending forward by the two breasts — that one who manifests a certain Śaiva form, blue as a blue lotus — your advocate (puruṣakāra), O [Goddess], is victorious.

Verse 12

prapadyōrdhvaṃ nādaṃ layadahanabhasmīkṛtakulaḥ
prasādāttē jantuḥ śivamakulamamba praviśati ॥ 12 ॥

Having entered the middle path — unrecognized by [the duality of] Prakāśa and Ānanda — having absorbed this pair called Sun-and-Moon, ascending to the Nāda above, the seeker whose lineage (kula) has been incinerated by the fire of laya — by your grace, O Mother, that creature attains the auspicious, kula-transcendent (akula) Śiva.

Verse 13

kaṭākṣaśchēdyatra kvachana tava mātaḥ karuṇayā
śarīrī sadyō'yaṃ vrajati paramānandatanutām ॥ 13 ॥

Humans, animals, celestial beings — this triple world drowning in the ocean of saṃsāra, buffeted by crores of tri-guṇa waves — wherever your compassionate sidelong glance falls upon some being, O Mother, that embodied one immediately attains the state of the body of supreme bliss.

Verse 14

Dark-limbed as the priyangu creeper, wearing a garment reddish as tender shoots, adorned with beautiful pearl ornaments in radiant array — she who bows forward under the weight of twin breasts like full clusters: those who even once meditate on you, O wish-creeper, attain the state of Śiva's divine wish-gem (chintāmaṇi-pada).

bhavāni pratyagrā śivachidamṛtābdhipraṇayinī ॥ 15 ॥

With the whirlpools of the six centers, with unlimited layers of mantra-waves, with gleaming mudrā-foam, with deities shining in many forms as fish — you flow as the river of supreme Nāda-nectar, O Bhavānī, ever fresh, one who yearns for the ocean of Śiva-consciousness-nectar.

Verse 16

-mavasthāṃ prāptāni tvayi tu paramavyōmavapuṣi ॥ 16 ॥

Though [all] your forms are earth, water, fire, wind, ether, soul, moon, and sun — yet how great, O Mother, is your majesty [beyond them]! These are seen everywhere not even attaining their most minute state — but in you, who are the body of the supreme ether (paramavyōma), they find no place at all.

Verse 17

pramāṇaṃ nirvāṇaṃ prakṛtimabhibhūtiṃ paraguhāṃ
vidhiṃ vidyāmāhuḥ sakalajananīmēva munayaḥ ॥ 17 ॥

Kalā (divine art), Ājñā (command), Prajñā (wisdom), Samaya (mystic union), Anubhūti (experience), Samarasa (equal-taste/equanimity), Guru, Paramparā (lineage), Vinaya (discipline), Upadeśa (initiation-teaching), Śivapada (Śiva's state), Pramāṇa (valid knowledge), Nirvāṇa, Prakṛti (nature), Abhibhūti (transcendence), Paraguhā (the Supreme Cave/Heart) — the sages declare all these to be the Sakala-Jananī alone.

Verse 18

śritē śāktē parvaṇyanukalitachinmātra gahanāṃ
svasaṃvittiṃ yōgī rasayati śivākhyāṃ bhagavatīm ॥ 18 ॥

When the mass of speech dissolves, then when the bindu-manifestation ceases, then when the tattva is reached in its eight indestructible sound-forms — resting in the Śākta culmination, the yogi savors the depth that is pure consciousness alone — that Bhagavatī named Śivā.

Of the form of supreme bliss, the body of infinite Śiva-lordship, formless, whose nature is pure knowledge, of boundless compassion, generator (sāvitrī) of all worlds, the abode of the supreme unrivaled light — for those who worship her, let it be saṃsāra or liberation — she is Bhagavatī alone.

Having made the universe into a body, and even that into the heart, and the heart into the cosmic Person, and the Person as dwelling in the bindu, and even that in the depth called Ākāśa (sky-consciousness), and even that in what is called Jñāna (knowledge), and even that in the depth of supreme bliss — dwelling in the great ether-form (mahāvyōma): one practiced in the experience of you is victorious.

O You who are the rule of creation (vidhē), the knowable (vēdyē), knowledge (vidyē), the manifold traditions (vividha-samayē), the secret pill of the Vedas (vēda-gulikē), the wondrous (vicitrē), the primordial of the universe (viśvādyē), easily reached by the humble (vinaya-sulabhē), O mother of the Vedas — O knower of Śiva, dweller in the trident, generous bestower of Śiva's state, O treasury of Śiva, O auspicious Śivā — O Mother, bestow upon me unsurpassed devotion to you.

That [act by which] you made Brahmā's severed head into a begging-bowl in your hand; that [by which] you made Hari impaled on the trident into an ear-ornament; that [by which] Śiva adorned his throat with poison — O Mother, all of this is the playful display of your power that abides in Śiva.

O Mother, named Viriñcī (Brahmā) you create; named Hari you sustain the three worlds; named Rudra you dissolve and establish the Īśvara-state. As Nāda you sport about, breaking all bonds. Though one alone, you become many through distinctions of action, O daughter of the mountain.

Even by the minds of sages, purified of all impurities — your feet can barely be touched, ever only tremblingly. The summits of the Vedas (Upaniṣads), by their very nature hard as stone — O Pārvatī, how do they find their place on the tender buds of your feet?

Saints describe Bhagavatī as: a lightning-vine, the eternal one, the shoreless nectar-river, the one who has crossed all impurity, moonlight, nature unentangled in guṇa-knots, beyond speech, knowledge [personified], she whose bosom does not bow, Mother of the World, boundless, Lakṣmī.

The body is pure inert matter — made of earth, water, and the rest; and this person, as a conscious one (cētana), experiences joy and sorrow. Though clearly knowing this, the embodied one cannot abandon the identification with the body — this is the one who is outside your tradition (samaya-bāhya), O daughter of the mountain.

When father, mother, brother, dear friend, attendant, home, wife, body, land, friends, and wealth — when all these depart from me — then, O Mother of great moonlight, be swiftly present by your compassion, shattering the blinding darkness of fear and delusion.

O Mother of all, you first arose as Satī, daughter of Dakṣa — then left that form with its fault — and thereafter were born as the daughter of the mountain-king. Eternally non-beginning, non-ending, inseparable power of Śambhu — yet you became his wife through marriage! Ah, who can know your story?

paraṃ brahma kṣudraṃ tava niyatamānandakaṇikā ।
śivādi kṣityantaṃ trivalayatanōḥ sarvamudarē
tavāstē bhaktasya sphurasi hṛdi chitraṃ bhagavati ॥ 29 ॥

The sun, moon, fire, and the rest — mere sparks of your radiance. Para Brahman — merely a tiny particle of your bliss. All from Śiva down to the earth, within the body of the three-fold coil — all dwells in your womb. Yet, O wondrous Bhagavatī, you flash within the heart of your devotee.

Verse 30

davīyō nēdīyaḥ sadasaditi viśvaṃ bhagavatī
sadā paśyantyākhyāṃ vahasi bhuvanakṣōbhajananīm ॥ 30 ॥

Before, behind, within, without — immeasurable and measured, supreme and gross, subtle, sakala (with parts) and akula (partless), hidden and manifest, very far and very near, sat (being) and asat (non-being) — thus you bear the name Paśyantī (the Seeing One), O Bhagavatī, Mother of all universe-perturbations.

Entering your path — through the eyes of the guru, endowed with natural compassion that destroys the dense darkness of the six paths, beyond counting — the blessed ones attain for long [the vision of] you, Bhagavatī: she who takes the form of the supreme Ājñā, who swiftly renders the devotee's Śiva-body [pure and divine].

-rbhajantē tattvaughāḥ praśamamanukalpaṃ paravaśāḥ ॥ 32 ॥

As the sun's rays [into the sun], as sparks [into fire's brightness], as ocean waves [into the ocean], as drops [scattered from arrested greatness] — O Mother, the hosts of tattvas (cosmic principles), ever rising and falling with their own sāttvika qualities, helplessly under your dominion, dissolve into you for an era and then emerge again.

The moon, Viṣṇu, Brahmā, Prakṛti, the atom, the soul, the sun, self-nature (svabhāva), the Jina (Jain principle), the Buddhist sage, the stained-space (ākāśa-mala), Śiva, Śakti — the saints declare you, Bhagavatī, as having taken on the form accessible to scripture through all these diverse conceptions.

Verse 34

avidyā tvaṃ vidyā tvamasi nikhilaṃ tvaṃ kimaparaṃ
pṛthaktattvaṃ tvattō bhagavati na vīkṣāmaha imē ॥ 34 ॥

Śiva is you; Śakti is you; you are Samayā (the esoteric unity); you are Samayinī (the adept of Samaya); you are the Self; you are Dīkṣā (initiation); you are Aṇimā-ādi (the siddhis beginning with anima); you are Avidyā (ignorance); you are Vidyā (knowledge); you are everything. O Bhagavatī, we see no separate tattva [other than you] — distinct from you.

tathāpyardhaṃ bhūtvā viharasi śivasyēti kimidam ॥ 35 ॥

Through you alone that Being knows; through you alone he ever creates; through you alone he wills, O Mother; you are all of whose bodies are all things. You carry the universal nature equal to Śambhu of the supreme-ether body — yet you sport as his half (ardhāṅginī)! What wonder is this?

-nnayēyaṃ tvatpūjāstutivirachanēnaiva divasān ॥ 36 ॥

O Mother, through countless previous births — through the gradual exhaustion of karma accumulated in those births — attaining at last in one birth the guru who has the form of Śiva, having received the Śaiva initiation, having known you and your Śiva-body — may I spend my days solely in worshipping, praising, and composing [verse] for you.

Verse 37

In the six-petaled lotus that has arisen, the pericarp (karṇikā) is the sacred yoni; in the spread of that yoni, the well-known Oṃkāra-throne. Within that too — bowing under the weight of the bosom, known as Kuṇḍalinī — that dark-hued Sakala-Jananī I ever contemplate.

In earth, in water, in fire, in wind, in sky, in the moon, in the sun, and in the worshipper too — as one Śakti manifesting eightfold. Though you bow the world under the weight of your twin breasts, O Sakala-Jananī — you are That [one power]. Protect me — this [prayer] is beyond words.
