About this stotra
Origin and RevelationLalitha Sahasranamam is a sacred text of one thousand names of Goddess Lalitha Tripura Sundari, the supreme form of the Divine Mother. 'Lalitha' comes from the word Lila or play and means 'The Playful One', although the name has several deeper layers of meaning. The text is found in the Brahmanda Purana, in the section known as the Lalitopakhyana, and takes the form of a dialogue between Sage Hayagriva, an avatar of Vishnu, and Sage Agastya.
The text was composed by the eight Vak Devis, the goddesses of speech, who are among the attendants of the Goddess in the Sri Chakra. Their names are Vasini, Kameshvari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayani, Modini, Sarveshvari, and Kaulini. They composed the thousand names by direct command of the Goddess herself, following her victory over the demon Bhandasura. Bhandasura had been created from the ashes of Kamadeva after Shiva burned him with his third eye. Shiva gave the ash-born figure life and granted it immense boons, and it went on to oppress all the worlds for sixty thousand years. It was to destroy this demon that the Goddess manifested. After the victory, the Vak Devis revealed the Sahasranamam to Hayagriva, who in turn taught it to Agastya, through whom it entered the world of human seekers.
The phalasruthi opens with the declaration: aanena sadrusham stotram na bhootam na bhavishyati — no prayer equal to this has ever existed before, nor will exist in the future. It is considered the most secret of all secret teachings dear to Lalitha. The Goddess: Lalitha Tripura SundariLalitha means "she who plays" — the name points to the effortless, playful nature of her creative power. Tripura Sundari means "the beautiful one of the three cities," referring to her sovereignty over the three worlds and the three states of waking, dream, and deep sleep. She is also known as Sri Mata, Sri Maharajni, Raja Rajeshvari, Kameshvari, and Parabhattarika, among many other names. Her consort is Kameshvara, the form of Shiva as pure consciousness, and her union with him represents the non-dual ground of all existence: consciousness and its power as one reality.
She is depicted as radiant, red in complexion, four-armed, holding a sugarcane bow, five flower arrows, a noose, and a goad. She is seated on the Sri Chakra throne, which is itself Shiva. Her physical description in the Dhyana shloka and across the names of the Sahasranamam is not merely ornamental: each detail corresponds to a specific philosophical or cosmological meaning within the Sri Vidya tradition.Structure and Range of the NamesThe thousand names are not a random collection of epithets. They move through several distinct registers. Some names describe her form, beauty, and royal sovereignty. Others describe her cosmic functions as creator, sustainer, and dissolver of the universe. A large group of names is philosophical and Tantric in nature, identifying her with Kundalini Shakti, with the fifteen Nitya goddesses, with the fifty letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, and with the Sri Chakra and its geometry. Others are devotional in register, addressing her as the compassionate mother, the granter of boons, the remover of fear.
The text can be recited as a continuous stotra (hymn) or as a namavali (archana list), where each name is preceded by "Om" and followed by "Namaha." In the namavali form, used widely in temple worship, the endings of the names are modified to the dative case. Both forms of recitation carry full benefit according to tradition.Philosophical SignificanceThe Lalitha Sahasranamam holds a central place in the Sri Vidya tradition, which is one of the most philosophically developed schools of Shakta Tantra. Sri Vidya understands the entire universe as the self-expression of the Goddess, and the Sri Chakra as the geometric map of that expression, from the outer world to the innermost point of pure consciousness. Reciting the names is therefore not understood as prayer directed outward but as a progressive meditation on the nature of reality itself.
The Sahasranamam affirms the Goddess as both saguna (with attributes, the personal deity) and nirguna (without attributes, pure awareness). Several names identify her directly with the Brahman of the Upanishads. She is called Brahmamayi (she who is Brahman) and Chidananda-lahari (the wave of consciousness and bliss). Within the non-dual Shakta reading, devotion to her and inquiry into the Self are understood as converging paths, not competing ones.Benefits, from the PhalasruthiThe phalasruthi of the Lalitha Sahasranamam is treated as a separate stotra in its own right. It states the following benefits for sincere and regular recitation:Freedom from all diseases (sarva roga prasamanam) and growth of all forms of wealth (sarva sampath pravardhanam)Protection from accidental and untimely death (sarvaapat mrityu shamanam, akala mrityu nivaranam)Relief from all fevers and afflictions (sarva jvararthi hananam) and the granting of long life (deergayushya pradayakam)Granting of children to those who are childless (putra pradam aputranam)Fulfillment of the four purusharthas: dharma, artha, kama, and mokshaDirect blessing by Goddess Lalitha for all the wishes of those who chant daily with devotion: tasmai sri lalitha devi preethabheeshtam prayachatiVictory over enemies and protection from negative influencesThe phalasruthi also specifies particularly auspicious occasions for recitation. Chanting on the full moon day (Pournami), facing the moon and meditating on the Goddess, is said to remove diseases and grant long life. For those who cannot chant daily, the text recommends chanting at minimum on Sankranti, the equinoxes, one's own birthday, one's spouse's birthday, and one's son's birthday, as well as on Navami, Chaturdashi, Fridays during the waxing moon, and Pournami. How and When to ChantTime: The ideal time is the brahma muhurta (roughly 90 minutes before sunrise) or early morning after bathing. Fridays are especially auspicious for Lalitha worship. The full moon day each month is the most important regular occasion. Lalitha Navami, falling on the ninth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Magha, is the most significant annual occasion.
Forms of recitation: In stotra form, the names are chanted in sequence as a continuous text. In namavali or archana form, each name is offered individually with "Om" before and "Namaha" after, typically accompanied by an offering of flowers or bilva leaves. Temple worship commonly uses the archana form. Both are considered equally valid.
Preparation: Traditional practice recommends bathing before recitation, sitting facing east or north, lighting a lamp, and offering whatever flowers are available. Chanting with an understanding of the meaning of the names is emphasized across all commentarial traditions as significantly deepening the benefit.
Accessibility: Unlike many Tantric mantras which require formal initiation from a guru, the Lalitha Sahasranamam is widely considered open to all sincere devotees regardless of background. This is one reason for its broad reach across communities. It is considered a complete sadhana in itself: a practice that integrates devotion, mantra, and contemplation into a single, accessible daily discipline.
