About this stotra

This verse is a heartfelt plea to the Lord (Shiva) for forgiveness for any sins committed through various faculties—hands, feet, speech, body, actions, mind, ears, and eyes. Through these different faculties, we may err in various ways:
Kara (Hands) – Hands are our primary instruments of physical creation. The hands that create can also destroy! They grasp with greed, strike in anger, take what isn't ours, and engage in dishonest deeds. Through ignorance or intent, they become tools of harm rather than help.
Charan (Feet) - The vehicle that makes us move around, our feet often lead us astray: rushing towards wrongful deeds, stepping into places of vice, trampling mindlessly upon smaller creatures, walking the path of temptation rather than wisdom, and hurrying towards desires while ignoring our inner compass.
Vak (Speech) - The tongue, sharpest of all weapons, can inflict deep wounds: through cruel words, lies, gossip, slander, harsh criticism, and mindless speech that hurts others. Even our silence becomes sin when truth needs to be spoken but we choose comfort over courage.
Kaya (Body) - Engaging the body in impure or immoral activities, acting with aggression, consuming what is harmful for it and the mind, neglecting its sacred nature as a temple of the divine.
Karma (Actions) - The deeds we perform or neglect: engaging in prohibited acts (avihitam), failing in prescribed duties (vihitam), and above all, claiming doership through ego rather than seeing ourselves as mere instruments of the Divine Will.
Shravana (Ears) - Our precious receivers of sound often tune into what pollutes the mind: listening to gossip, harmful speech, feeding on complaints and negativity, even wasting precious time on empty talk, while turning deaf to words of wisdom and truth.
Nayana (Eyes) - These sacred windows to the world often misguide us: seeing through the lens of ego, gazing with selfishness, lust or jealousy, feeding on scenes harmful to our own well-being, while remaining blind to that which needs our attention.
Manas (Mind) - This restless architect of thoughts often leads us into darkness: breeding negative emotions, harbouring ill-will, plotting harm, indulging in endless desires, dwelling in the past with regret or future with anxiety, while ignoring the peace of the present moment.
As we can see, there are countless ways our faculties can lead us astray, each one capable of both virtue and transgression. The verse specifically mentions vihitaṃ (prescribed/ordained actions) and avihitaṃ (prohibited/forbidden actions) because errors can occur in both contexts. Even when performing prescribed duties (vihitaṃ), we might do them with wrong attitude, without proper attention, or with ego - for instance, even in prayer, we might be distracted or doing it mechanically. Similarly, we might engage in prohibited actions (avihitaṃ) either knowingly or through ignorance, such as speaking harshly or acting selfishly in our daily interactions.
The phrase ‘sarvametatkṣamasva’ means ‘please forgive all of these transgressions.’ The devotee prays to Lord Shiva to forgive all sins mentioned earlier - whether committed through body, speech, actions, senses, or mind, knowingly or unknowingly. This phrase represents the central request of the entire prayer.
What makes this journey challenging is our innate tendencies and the deep influence of our family and social environment. We each face unique challenges in mastering our body and mind. Yet, in acknowledging our shortcomings and seeking divine guidance, we find hope. The more we align ourselves with the Divine, the more we naturally gravitate towards a Sattvic (pure) nature - our thoughts, actions, and tendencies gradually purify themselves, and what once seemed like constant struggle transforms into natural, righteous living. Understanding this nature of our actions and their consequences, we seek the grace and forgiveness of Sri Mahādeva Śambhu, Lord Shiva, the ocean of compassion (karuṇābdhe), recognising that only through His mercy can one be absolved of all sins. The repetition of "jaya jaya" emphasises the victory of the Lord's compassion and forgiveness.
This mantra becomes particularly powerful when incorporated into our daily spiritual practice. At day's end, we can take time to reflect on how we used or misused our faculties, reviewing our thoughts, words, and actions with honest self-examination. This review should be done with gentle awareness rather than harsh self-judgment. Then, chanting this prayer with sincerity helps lighten our hearts and inspires us to do better tomorrow. Such regular practice of reflection and prayer gradually transforms our nature, leading us closer to our divine essence.
