About this stotra
The Devi Bhujanga Stotram is a 28-verse hymn composed by Ādi Śaṅkarācārya in the flowing bhujanga-prayāta (serpentine) meter, praising the Supreme Goddess as Tripurasundarī. The stotram opens with a striking image of the Devi seated on the throne of supreme bliss, surrounded by the five world-guardians beginning with Brahmā, holding her characteristic weapons of bow, arrow, noose, and goad. She is celebrated as Śaṅkarādvaitam — the non-dual reality that is one with Śiva himself.
The verses weave together Śākta devotion with Advaitic insight, contemplating the Goddess as hidden within the five sheaths (pañcha kośa) of the human being, seated on the great throne of yoga within the heart. The hymn moves between philosophical depth and tender devotion, acknowledging that the Devi sports freely through creation in the forms of Brahmā and other deities, yet remains ever at rest in her own transcendent nature — beyond knower, knowing, and known.
The closing verse captures the intimate tone that pervades the entire composition: the poet offers his "childish prattle" as praise, asking the Divine Mother to accept it with the indulgence a mother shows her infant's stumbling words. This blend of philosophical precision and heartfelt surrender makes the Devi Bhujanga Stotram a cherished text for devotees of the Goddess in the Śrī Vidyā tradition.

Verse 1: Seated on the throne of Supreme Bliss — thronged by five world-guardians from Brahmā (Viriñchi) onward — holding bow, arrow, noose, and goad in her hands: may that great Tripurā, the non-dual power of Śaṅkara, protect us.

Verse 2: Deeply hidden within — within the five sheaths (kōśas) from the food-sheath onward, each described as having its head, wings, and tail — seated on the great yoga-throne in the innermost: I eternally praise that inner sanctum of Śiva, the destroyer of the three cities.
