About this stotra

This verse is an invocation to the light of the lamp, which is often lit daily as well as during rituals in Hindu tradition. The lamp’s light is revered as a symbol of knowledge and the dispelling of darkness, both literal and metaphorical. The shloka begins by highlighting the benevolent powers of the lamp's light. It states that the lamp's radiance brings about auspiciousness and well-being (śubhaṃ karoti). The light also bestows profound spiritual blessings (kalyāṇam), good health (ārogyaṃ), and prosperity and wealth (dhanasaṃpadā). This conveys how the act of lighting the lamp is believed to invoke divine grace that uplifts the practitioner's life in multiple dimensions - spiritual, physical, and material.
The shloka then goes on to say that the lamp's light also serves to destroy the negative or hostile inclinations of one's adversaries (śatrubuddhivināśāya). But the light of the lamp has an even deeper spiritual significance - it is seen as the light of knowledge that dispels the darkness of ignorance. Just as the lamp's flames illuminate the physical darkness, the shloka asserts that the lamp's light illuminates the metaphorical darkness of the mind, removing the veil of ignorance that obscures true understanding of our self.
The verse concludes with the words “dīpajyotirnamostute” - “salutations to the light of the lamp.” This is a reverential acknowledgement of the lamp as a sacred and auspicious symbol worthy of veneration, for it is believed to be a conduit for divine wisdom and enlightenment.
Thus, the lamp is a vessel that not only bestows material blessings, but also enlightens the mind and liberates the practitioner from the bondage of ignorance. Regularly chanting this verse while lighting the lamp, with this meaning in mind, is bound to bring forth its benefits in abundance.
