About this stotra

The Aghamarṣaṇa Sūktam is a powerful Vedic hymn from the Ṛgveda, attributed to the sage Aghamarṣaṇa, whose very name means "destroyer of sins." Addressed primarily to Varuṇa, the cosmic sovereign who governs the moral order and the waters, this sūktam is traditionally recited during ritual bathing and purificatory rites. The hymn invokes Varuṇa alongside Indra, Bṛhaspati, Savitṛ, and Agni, beseeching them to cleanse the reciter of transgressions committed through mind, speech, or action.
The verses weave together themes of cosmic creation—the emergence of time, the placement of sun and moon, the ordering of heaven and earth—with the intimate prayer for personal purification. Sacred rivers including the Gaṅgā, Yamunā, and Sarasvatī are invoked to join in this cleansing. The sūktam culminates in profound Vedāntic declarations: jyotir jvalati brahmāham asmi—"the light blazes, I am Brahman"—revealing that ultimate purification is the recognition of one's true nature.
Widely chanted during sandhyāvandana, river bathing, and expiatory rites, the Aghamarṣaṇa Sūktam is said to absolve even grave transgressions, granting the reciter freedom from sin and the attainment of the highest realms.

I take refuge in Varuna, the golden-horned one. Being entreated, grant me a sacred ford for purification. Whatever I have consumed from the unrighteous, and whatever gifts I have received from sinners — whatever evil has been done by me through mind, speech, or action — may Indra, Varuna, Brihaspati, and Savita purify that, again and again. Salutations to Agni who dwells in waters, salutations to Indra, salutations to Varuna, salutations to Varuni, salutations to the Waters.

May that which is cruel in the waters, that which is impure, that which is unpeaceful — may all that depart from us. Whatever sin arises from excessive eating, from excessive drinking, and from accepting gifts from the fierce or unworthy — may King Varuna wipe that away with his hand. Thus I become sinless, free from impurity, liberated, released from all guilt. Having ascended to the ridge of heaven, may one attain unity with Brahman. May Varuna who dwells in the waters, the destroyer of sins, purify us. O Ganga, O Yamuna, O Sarasvati, O Shutudri, unite with this hymn of praise, together with Parushni. O Asikni, O Marudvridha, O Vitasta, O Arjikiya, hear us along with Sushoma. From the blazing tapas, both cosmic order and truth were born. From that, night was born; from that arose the ocean of waters.

From the primordial ocean arose the year, the measure of time. The sovereign Lord ordained days and nights for all that moves and breathes. The Creator fashioned the sun and moon as in ages past, and shaped heaven, earth, the atmosphere, and the luminous realm beyond. Whatever dust clings from the earth, whatever impurity from the atmosphere and the two world-halves — may Varuna, the destroyer of sin, purify these waters. May the Vasus purify, may Varuna purify, may the destroyer of sin purify. He stands at the center of all beings, the guardian of the universe. He is the world of those who perform meritorious deeds; he is the golden realm beyond death. That golden abode, resting between heaven and earth, is the luminous heaven.

Grant us progeny, prosperity, and perfect instruction. I am the radiant light that blazes with moisture. I am Brahman, the light that blazes forth. Whatever I am, I am Brahman. I am indeed Brahman. I offer myself into myself — Svaha! One who commits forbidden and improper acts, who spills seed unlawfully, who slays an embryo, who violates the teacher's bed — Varuna, the purifier of waters and remover of sins, liberates such a one from that transgression. The earth covered with dust — make it weep forth with rain, declare the wise seers. The ocean strode forth in the primordial cosmic order, generating offspring, the king of all existence. The mighty bull Soma, self-pressed upon the sacred filter of sheep's wool, has grown immensely great, the shining drop of immortality.
